August 2011: Notes from the 61st General Service Conference

A past General Service Board Trustee shares his experience

The 61st General Service Conference met in Manhattan, New York, at the Crowne Plaza from Sunday, May 1, 2011, through Saturday, May 7, 2011, with the theme: “We are Responsible for AA’s Future—Let It Begin With Us….” Picture a home group business meeting with 135 members showing up after having each spent some 20-plus hours reading background materials prior to the meeting, and you’ll have some idea of what your General Service Conference looks and feels like.

Following a group declaration of The Responsibility Statement, the Conference began business in earnest. The Conference Committees spent two days of deliberation discussing and debating agenda items. The entire Conference heard reports from the Chair of the General Service Board, Chair of AAWS (AA World Services), Chair of AA Grapevine, and the Treasurer of the General Service Board. The Chair of AAWS disclosed that while in good shape today, AAWS is concerned about future revenues. AAWS has begun a proposed project to assist in sales by making electronic books available as “apps” at a development cost of $400,000 over the next two years. The Chair of AA Grapevine also discussed that AA Grapevine is planning to produce “apps” of their top six best sellers, including “Language of the Heart,” “Best of Bill,” etc., at a cost of not more than $6,000 for each title.
