Dear Reader,

In the world of art and ideas, a classic is something so revolutionary that it endures decade after decade, becoming an icon, a part of the natural order of things. In that sense, Dr. Silkworth's exhortation to Bill just before his eventful journey to Akron, Ohio, in 1935, is an AA classic--a classic formulation not only of how to carry the message to another suffering alcoholic, but also of the nature of alcoholism itself.
