September 2011: Doctors' Opinions

More can be done to educate the medical community about alcoholism

"I cried tears of gratitude for the medical professionals who helped save my life."

A few weeks ago, at my local Big Book study group, we had a discussion about doctors. Members seemed to be unanimously complaining about how poorly doctors understand alcoholism and recovery. I can acknowledge and appreciate criticism regarding the medical community, but when I was at the World Convention last summer in San Antonio and AA presented it’s 30 millionth Big Book to the American Medical Association, I cried tears of gratitude for the medical professionals who helped save my life.

When my bottom was greeting me with a big smile and open arms, the one thing I did right was get myself a therapist and tell her the truth. I had been drinking several bottles of red wine (a thin veil of sophistication) daily, not to mention beers and complementary pot smoking, with proper binges on weekends.
