"When I was new to sobriety, my best friend was active in district and area service."

When I was new to sobriety, my best friend was active in district and area service. She encouraged me to join her, but I told her, “No, that’s for the bossy people in AA.” She told me it wasn’t like that, but I continued to believe it was. In AA, this is called “contempt prior to investigation.”

When I was 10 years sober, my husband and I moved to Maui, Hawaii. It occurred to me that AA had done a lot for me, and that maybe I ought to do something for AA.
