ROUGHLY SIX AND A HALF YEARS AGO a doctor put me into a nursing home, with alcoholic arthritis and everything else possible. . . . First stop out was a bottle store. . . I went through a few hundred pounds I had in my savings account. . .suit went, watch went. . . . From these few sales I raised a few quid to keep myself in liquor and buy a train ticket to my sister's. I arrived in Bloemfontein with less than enough to catch a bus. For nine months never sober on the job I didn't miss a day's work. Finally the old man spotted me coming from a pub. By some miracle he gave me some advice: to commit myself to a mental hospital and stay there for six months. He took me there himself.
