The "Magic Island
Where "voodon" fires dot the mountains every night, a lady loner-keeps her serenity by practicing the principles
HERE in Haiti we hear words such as Honfour (Voodon church, sometimes spelled voodoo and voodau); Hougan and Mambo (high priest and priestess of voodon); Loa (voodon gods); Papa Gede (loa of the crossroads); Damballa (a snake--the most powerful of loa); Govi (bottles of clay containing the souls of the departed--always kept on the altar and covered with small white cloths).
