February 2012: No More One Night Stands

A woman searches for her sexual ideal in sobriety

The ideal for sex is mentioned in the Big Book. “We asked God to mold our ideals and help us live up to them … Whatever our ideal turns out to be, we must be willing to grow toward it ... In meditation, we ask God what we should do about each specific matter. The right answer will come if we want it … Suppose we fall short of the chosen ideal and stumble? Does this mean we are going to get drunk? … If we are sorry for what we have done, and have the honest desire to let God take us to better things, we believe we will be forgiven and will have learned our lesson.”

In my drinking days, I was a barfly and sexually promiscuous. My love affair was with draft beer. I had multiple sex partners and no long-term affiliations. I didn’t like who I was. My lifestyle and drinking kept me depressed, and I had no self-esteem. I didn’t see how my drinking was affecting my social life and causing me to live in such misery. I joined a church and briefly quit drinking. I also stopped sleeping around and was introduced to my ideal: abstinence of sex before marriage.
