July 2012: Safe House

I started drinking at age 12 after my parents divorced. I went to live with my mother and her abusive, alcoholic boyfriend. After they kicked me out of the house three years later, I tried living with my father, but he was fighting his own battle with drugs and alcohol and he wasn’t able to care for me. I floated around from house to house and a few abandoned buildings until I was 18, when I got my own place.

Then certain incidents occurred that showed me my progression with alcohol, where it was leading me, and how I was doing the same things and expecting different results. I had two DUIs resulting in probation and out-patient programs. Looking back with sober eyes, I can see God’s map that led me to AA, and I see that everything fits together like a puzzle.
