Pushing Old-Timers Away

Responses from young readers on the topic of singleness of purpose

I want to share an experience I had at a noon meeting the other day. The topic was, "Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety." We had made our way around most of the room when a woman in the back of the room, with no "identifier," shared about general recovery stuff. Two speakers later, a woman--not identified as an alcoholic or even an addict--recounted her recent hospitalization for bulimia and how the meetings had helped her so very much. The next speaker identified herself as being "addicted to relationships" and shared at length about her struggles. While she was sharing, I noticed an old-timer get up and leave the meeting.
