During the last five years at the New Roseville Group in Michigan, I've often heard it discussed that a Fourth Step should include a written inventory. The consensus usually is that writing makes it more real, makes an inventory more honest, and gives you something to look back on and review when going on to making the Eighth Step list.
Likewise, online meetings can be more honest and give me a way to open up more. I write better than I speak.
