Foundation for Surrender

Responses from readers concerning two pieces in the November 1996 issue: "We Tread Innumerable Paths" and "A Larger Welcome"

Thank you for publishing "We Tread Innumerable Paths" about the importance of keeping AA "nonreligious." When I was five years sober, I found myself living abroad with a very limited choice of meetings. The largest group was run by a man who told newcomers that the only way to get sober was to believe in God. He completely ignored the Third Step discussion in the "Twelve and Twelve" which discusses the approach of accepting only a "higher power" as the foundation for surrender. Although a believer in God, I was horrified, and I and another member started a more inclusive group. It kept me sober and probably helped a few other alcoholics as well.
