A religious organization?

Responses from readers to the February and May 1999 issues on the topic of using the Lord's Prayer at AA meetings.

I just read in a magazine that in New York a federal appellate court has upheld a ruling that an atheist cannot be forced by the court to attend AA. The man, convicted of a DUI charge, was ordered to attend meetings but sued on the grounds of religious freedom because "the meetings involve religious exercises." The court agreed that "the religious nature of the meetings" would violate his rights as an atheist. The U.S. Court of Appeals upheld the ruling.
