The delicate thread

Responses from readers to the February and May 1999 issues on the topic of using the Lord's Prayer at AA meetings.

Recently my home group has undertaken the debate about changing our closing format to include something other than the Lord's Prayer. It has been my experience that when an attempt to understand the full significance of the Lord's Prayer in an AA meeting is made, one of two things occurs: either a debate ensues over principles, or an argument takes place between personalities. Debate can be a rigorous discussion how to best apply those principles, guided by the Traditions of AA; the argument occurs when a group member feels that her or his personal beliefs are being attacked. Regrettably, in my experience, too many AAs get stuck in the personal rather than in the principle.
