Your Move

A tale of gratitude

Responses from readers to the question, "Where do you intend to be on New Year's Eve?"

On January 1, 1997 at four A.M., while speaking on the phone to my wife of sixteen years, I told her I was putting down my last beer and switching to coffee. We spoke until nine o'clock that morning, finally agreeing to get back together after a two-week separation. Last New Year's, 1998, to celebrate two years' sobriety, I committed to chair the four A.M. marathon meeting at my home group. No one showed up, so I mopped the floors and drank coffee. My plans for New Year's Eve 1999 are to attend marathon meetings and to chair the same four A.M. meeting--or mop the floors! P.S., My wife and I now have nineteen years as a couple, and it has never been better.
