The first thirty years of my life were spent feeling always somewhat less-than and isolated. I didn't believe in the basic concepts my Methodist and Baptist and Roman Catholic playmates and neighbors embraced and knew. Somehow, it was more proof of my difference.

God chased me out of my first AA meetings, riding on the shoulders of everyone else in the rooms! (Perhaps not being ready to stop drinking had something to do with it.) A couple of years later, desperation made me listen beyond...
