AA Grapevine Readers Respond to "Singleness of Purpose--what Are AAs Saying Today?" Featured in the May 2004 Issue

Like bread and butter

"Hi, my name is Donna and I am an alcoholic and a drug addict." That's what I say when I introduce myself at an AA meeting. I was troubled with the article in the May issue, "And a. . .Anonymous." The author wrote that if a person adds an "anda," he or she is classifying him- or herself as different.

I am not different. I am a person who is just trying to stay sober one day at a time. I need to say that I am an alcoholic and a drug addict. I abused alcohol and cocaine for more than twenty years. They went together for me like bread and butter. One was almost never without the other. I need to say this out loud for my own ears to hear to remind myself every day how truly insane I was with both substances.
