January 2014: Hula Girl

He won the best-dressed contest and a free trip to AA

A week before I turned 21, I was arrested for my third DUI. But I had already been arrested once for theft. To all outward appearances, I was a healthy, athletic young man. The truth is I was clinically depressed and already what the professionals call a late-stage alcoholic. I had been in numerous car accidents and had walked away from one that the guys at the body shop thought should have been a fatal collision. In another wreck, I came inches away from killing a man as he was getting out of his car. I took his door, but fortunately not him.

I couldn’t blame my upbringing: I grew up with loving parents, a dad who had been in AA recovery nearly my whole life, and a parochial school education that imparted excellent academics and morals. These beliefs were deeply embedded in my character by my parents, teachers and friends. However I would learn to discard or bury them as alcohol and drugs brought me down a path of serial dishonesty and carelessness with myself and those around me.
