Fourth and Vine

He had spent 20 years of his life at the bar on the corner until one winter day

"You can always find me at the intersection of 4th and Vine." That is what I would tell people. The pub there, Jack's tavern, was my home for over 20 years. It's the kind of place where curiosity and deep-seated resentments collide. I spent most of my days there. It was 12 years ago that things changed. You can call that sober grace or perhaps something more powerful.

I had begun drinking when I was only 13 years old and was a full-fledged alcoholic by the time I was 18. I was able squeeze by high school with a 'C' average, though I spent most of my days partying instead of studying. Things only got progressively worse after that. My college years were just as blurry, not to mention awkward.
