March 2014: Recycling Day

She took better care of her trash than she did of herself

There were signs that I was an alcoholic, but of course I didn’t see them. About 25 years ago, I told my boss where he could go. Twice. That was during the ’80s. Back then, people swore in business meetings all the time. However, this was up close and personal. Though I kept my job, it wasn’t the same again for either of us. Ultimately I was laid off. Go figure.

Three more moves, and by 2004 I was living in a rural area of western Washington State. Being environmentally conscientious, I took better care of my trash than I did of myself. As I took out my recycling one
day, even I was taken aback by how many glass containers were in the heaping bin—and I’m not talking about mayonnaise jars. I distinctly remember thinking to myself that the neighbors, who I didn’t know, might think an alcoholic lived there. So I quit recycling.
