I had decided that I was going to die the way I was drinking. I was taking in half a gallon of whisky and a 12-pack of beer every day for about a year. My drinking had started around the age of 17 and I drank every day from then—rain, snow or sleet, healthy or sick. At first, I drank to go to sleep, then I drank to pass out.
