Her grandma would signal to pull over for coffee on her way to help a houseful of drunks

When I was a little girl, my brothers and I would go every day after school to a recovery home for men that my grandma ran. While we waited there for one of our parents to pick us up, we would drink cups of coffee with tons of sugar.

My grandmother got sober in September 1952 and she maintained that date until she died in 1972, just shy of 20 years. In those 19-plus years she carried the message of AA to many men and women in our area. She also opened a couple of mens’ recovery homes, one of which is still open today.
