A fear of being honest was a stumbling block to getting sober

In the early weeks of my recovery, I heard "How it Works" read many times. Once I got over the first paragraph I was all right and it made some sense to me.

What I had trouble with was the first part. It said that "those who are constitutionally incapable of being honest with themselves," may not recover. That sounded a lot like me. It went on to say that I was an "unfortunate," and "had been born that way", and that I was "naturally incapable of grasping and developing a manner of living which demands rigorous honesty."
