Am I Responsible?

Did you know that the Responsibility Declaration was written by an editor of Grapevine? A member gives a brief history

My lack of responsibility was a hallmark of my drinking life. I was a fast starter, but a poor finisher. I always seemed to sabotage my own best plans and efforts. Alcohol and bad decisions continued to drag me further down. So when I took my first responsible action in sobriety, joining AA, I was fearful of repeating the same mistakes again. My sponsor told me to take everything just a day at a time. My home group showed me by their example how we work together to make things happen. Two or three can do what one cannot. This was my first glimpse at AA service.

One of the ways that my home group carried the message was through Grapevine. In reading the articles I could see that our shared failings were a commonality, though our situations were as varied as the individual authors. Irresponsibility was a common theme that ran through all of the stories. It was in trying to find myself in the magazine that I noticed the Responsibility Declaration printed in Grapevine. It initially impressed me that we alcoholics could even live responsibly. This statement became a challenge for me, personally bolstering my commitment to remain responsible in all of my endeavors, at home, at work and within the group. The declaration reads:
