September 2012: Treats Anyone?

It was my second month of recovery, and I was floating on a “pink cloud.” What a blessing to be free of the daily hammering headache, the jangled nerves and the relentless anxiety as I faced the challenges of my job as a schoolteacher. My fourth-grade students no longer resembled the creatures in the movie “Gremlins.” In sobriety, I enjoyed their youthful energy and celebrated their accomplishments. I was starting to “intuitively know how to handle situations” which, in earlier days, had driven me to drink.

One Valentine’s Day, one of my children brought me a special gift—a red platter with at least 50 heart-shaped chocolates meticulously arranged atop white doilies. The platter was sealed in saran wrap and decorated with a gorgeous scarlet bow.
