An AA wonders if getting a sponsor is a requirement to staying sober

Very frequently, I hear in meetings and read in Grapevine, "Go to meetings, get a sponsor, work the Steps."

I want to let everyone in the AA world know that I had four sponsors, and not one of them mentioned the Steps. The first one I got talked all about her life and herself. The second one said that we would meet and that she would arrange for me to have a support group of people. It never happened and she wouldn't return my calls. The third one I had smiled all the time and called me, "honey." The third one urged me to get out of my marriage and get a divorce. She had no suggestions of where I, and my three minor children, would go, though.
