All By Myself

She learned in AA that drinking in the shower wasn’t social drinking

The first time I ever got drunk was in the third grade. I was drinking wine with some older people and laughing and having a good time. I was a shy child and I liked the way the wine made me feel.

I grew up in a good home with both parents in a suburb of Chicago. I was the sixth child out of seven—we were all about two years apart. All of us attended Catholic schools and were taught by nuns. I learned that it was a sin to even think something bad and that God would punish me.
