Dancing Again

At 30 years sober, a woman dives in and stops dragging her heels

In nearly 30 years of sobriety, I’ve been through death and divorce, getting and losing jobs, raising my kids, and watching them leave home. For a few years I only went to one meeting a week, but for the past 20 years I have gone to at least four meetings a week. I was having what I thought was a great life, until about two years ago, when I had a thought about drinking.

I was at an AA conference and the speaker was talking about popping the top off a beer and seeing that little wisp of vapor that escaped right before taking the first cold drink. I had never before gotten thirsty at an AA meeting, and that scared me. I tried to ignore the thought and listened to the rest of the speakers. By the end of the conference, I had reached a conclusion: It was time for me to revisit the Steps.
