Teacher Gets Schooled

The story Billy was about to share with the class would stay with his teacher for years

Back in the early ’80s, my drinking was slowly destroying my teaching career—and me. Many Sunday evenings, I’d try to drink just enough to dull the emotional pain, but not to the point where I’d become too much of a nervous and hungover wreck to teach the 6th graders on Monday morning.

Often in that last year of drinking I would miss the mark. Consequently, I wasn’t in the best shape many Mondays. In order to give myself some time to get over the shakes and anxiety, I’d spend the first 30 minutes of the morning having the kids share about their weekend, a great way to stall for time.
