A Table's Journey

The things we lose when we drink sometimes return in the most unexpected ways

In 1964, my parents emigrated to the U.S. from Germany. My father started a small painting company in Los Angeles, and as he became successful, we were able to afford a new furniture set for the living room. It consisted of a goldcolored couch, two armchairs and a wrought iron table (which my father gilded), with a crystal glass top.

In 1972, my mother finally had enough of my father’s heavy drinking and asked for a divorce. She decided it was best for my brother and me to continue our education in Germany, so we moved back to Europe.
