For a long time, he saw drinking as his just reward

One thing about alcohol that really got me in trouble was my notion that alcohol was a reward for hard work. As a child, I would see adults drinking on the weekends after a long week of work. Television commercials would show men and women celebrating a promotion or some other event with a toast. This was, and still is, a very common portrayal of alcohol.

Therefore, it was no surprise that my drinking started this way. My friends and brothers and I would drink on weekends, but stay dry during the week. Over the years, I took this idea of alcohol as a reward to an extreme.
