A Portrait of a Marriage

They met in a bar, did a lot of drinking together, and then both got sober in AA

The morning George and I got married in 1965 in Lenox, Ma., I had a fierce hangover and wanted a drink really badly. We only invited George's family to celebrate with us. We were married by a Justice of the Peace who was also a pig farmer. He lived right next door to a motel, so, we planned on staying there the night of our wedding.

After the ceremony, we went to the motel. However, the wind was blowing the wrong way and the smell from the pig farm was overwhelming. We had some drinks but even that could not dull the smell. We drove to Amenia, Conn., which was a dry town after midnight. We managed to get some booze before the witching hour came.
