Where the Trees Once Grew

Though the peaches gave way to concrete and steel, it remained a place to plant beautiful seeds

I grew up in a small town. We had little money and lived
in the worst neighborhood. I lived with family violence. Life was unbearable for me most of the time. It’s a miracle I didn’t kill myself.

We lived next door to a peach orchard. When the violence was too much, I would run out in the orchard and hide. One morning, the sound of heavy equipment woke me, and I looked outside. The state had come to tear the orchard down and build a prison.
