The spirituality he found in the rooms harkened back to his childhood in Missouri

When I was growing up in southwestern Missouri, common sense was thought to be a gift from God. You either had it or you didn't. It wasn't something you could learn in school. We were taught reading, writing and arithmetic, but nothing of common sense. In Jasper County, Mo., you were born with it. I would often hear my grandmother say, "That poor soul doesn't have the common sense God gave a goose!"
