Two men do what we do when an AA meeting gets canceled on a snowy Christmas Eve

I wandered into a Birmingham, Michigan church on Christmas Eve 2012. The parking lot was jammed for midnight mass, and it had started to snow. A surprise white Christmas. But in the church basement, where an AA meeting had been scheduled to be held, I found only an empty labyrinth. The meeting had been cancelled.

A handsome man in jeans walked in, as I walked out. He was wearing jeans in church on Christmas Eve; we had no need to explain to each other why we were there. We introduced ourselves and he suggested a nearby coffee shop. I said there was coffee in the lobby behind the sanctuary. We poured stale coffee and sat down in front of a fireplace where we could hear the chorus of “Joy to the World” sung by hundreds in the chapel attending midnight mass.
