After years of Al-Anon, how could she have not recognized her own alcoholism?

After 26 years as a member of Al-Anon, during which I faithfully followed the program to recover from the effects of growing up in an alcoholic home and then marrying an alcoholic, I somehow found myself living in a womens' shelter thousands of miles from my home.

I lay on my bed in the shelter, staring at the ceiling, wondering why my life had fallen apart again. Even though I had a college degree and had once brought in a high income, I was now on welfare. I was highly intelligent, but I had made poor choices. Now, I had landed myself in a shelter.
