Behind a Locked Door

A week ago, I got the news that my AA friend Chuck was found dead in his apartment. Someone had called the police because his door was locked and he wasn't answering his telephone. It turned out that he had started drinking again and had been drinking a lot. He died alone.

I met Chuck a few years ago, when I was group treasurer at a summer AA weekend retreat. He had a good sense of humor and we hit it off. We became friends, even though I wasn't as close to him as his male AA friends. I enjoyed his company. After the retreat, we continued to talk at meetings. He had a part-time job at the local historical society, and I would occasionally see him there, as it was close to the quilt shop where I enjoyed shopping.
