November 2012: I Love New York

Thanksgiving is a treacherous time for many of us alcoholics. It begins the holiday season and, particularly for the newcomer, resurrects memories of embarrassing behavior. But as sobriety progresses, we set aside a store of happier memories—good fun and fellowship with AA friends.

My favorite Thanksgiving recollection now is of my fifth sober one. I had finally worked at one place long enough to earn a paid vacation, and I decided on a trip to New York. I had traveled to see my family, gone to AA assemblies and conventions, moved a couple of times, but this was my first sober trip solo. I was aware, from others’ sharing in meetings, of the pitfalls I might encounter. I gathered some phone numbers from friends in the AA program, wrote down the intergroup office number in New York City, and packed my bags.
