Before I became sober on January 1, 2006, I had used alcohol to cope with my brother’s death from cancer in 1999, my father’s sudden death in 2001 and five full years of my husband’s post-9/11 unemployment. As of that day, I was barely keeping up with the demands of my full-time job and my part-time teaching job, and the maintenance of my home. So, my life improved immediately when I stopped drinking and started working my AA program.
