January 2013: On the Road to WACYPAA

An Irish visitor and her newcomer friend take off on a sober West Coast adventure

I’m an Irish cáilín (girl) from Dublin. I was recently spending a few weeks in L.A. in a friend’s apartment (he was living in Stockholm), when he contacted me to say that he was flying back to attend a convention in a place called Eugene, Oregon. I was thrilled to realize that Oregon was just up the road from L.A. and was delighted to get to go to an AA convention in America with the added bonus of seeing my friend! It was only when I started to look up flights, train prices and coach travel itineraries that I realized that “up the road” was not entirely true.

I decided to rent a car and drag my “newcomer” friend, Colleen, with me. The trip was amazing. We drove in the sunshine, rain and snow, sang to our hearts’ content and talked about lots of interesting things like boys, boys—and boys! After nearly 20 hours, we arrived in Eugene. When we pulled up at the front door of the convention, we were met by a huge buzzing crowd of young people.
