While I was drinking, I came to believe that I was crazy or mentally ill, and that my extremely heavy drinking was merely a symptom of some psychological disorder. I had been to many doctors, but amazingly, no one even asked me about my drinking.

After a short while in AA, I realized with great relief that my alcoholism had been the cause of my psychological problems. Thanks to my sobriety and the help of many kind people in the rooms, I also became aware that I had been using alcohol to treat a very serious mood disorder I had suffered from since my teens. A wonderful friend, Mary, even led me to a great doctor at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore who specialized in treating those disorders purely in alcoholics and addicts.
