September 2013: Confrontation

An old-timer learns a valuable lesson about the need to "discipline" her group

The other evening I was at my home group, sitting in the front row, glad to be with the women whom I have grown to love one day at a time in AA. It was my birthday week, and I was really excited to announce another year of sobriety.

Our chairs were arranged in a horseshoe around the speaker and there was a woman busy putting labels on some cards while the meeting got started. I felt something was just not quite right about this but, as I didn’t know her well, I decided to do nothing and tried to ignore the disruption. The secretary asked for birthday folks to identify themselves. I raised my hand, amazed and a little proud.
