I am a garden-variety drunk. When I drank, I got into trouble. Despite my unexplainable, antisocial behavior, I couldn't stop drinking on my own.

Before my alcoholism had progressed to the point of homelessness, unemployability, long-term incarceration or commitment to a mental institution for insanity, I landed in AA. And like most problem drinkers who first come to AA, I wasn't particularly interested in getting sober or in living a spiritual life. I just wanted to get out of trouble. I wanted to learn how to continue to drink without suffering any consequences.
