October 2013: Re-Connected

So he didn’t have a blown fuse after all. He just had to plug back in

You could say I had a short circuit in my Higher Power connection when I first arrived in AA. On my last weekend of drinking, I was standing in my driveway looking at a brand new crease along the passenger side of my seven-year-old compact car, and I had no idea how it had gotten there. Naturally I had been drunk the night before—it was a Saturday, after all. But this was a new low. I had scraped a wall, bumped into another car, and hit a water meter on three other occasions—but I was aware when those things had happened. Last night’s custom bodywork was a nasty mystery.

I went back inside our condo, dreading telling my wife. When she woke up, I sat on the sofa with tears running down my cheeks and blurted out, “I can’t go on like this.” I called the AA number listed in the phone book. The kind voice on the other end of the line told me that there was a beginners’ meeting that evening in my neighborhood. Perfect. He offered me a ride, but I declined. I wasn’t sure I wanted these AA people knowing where I lived!
