THE OLD STEREOTYPE OF THE TOWN DRUNK, as a lost sinner perversely pursuing his own destruction is giving way to a new concept of the alcoholic. He is coming to be seen as a sick and suffering human being whose drive to liquor comes from powerful forces beyond his control and who is in need of understanding and treatment rather than moral exhortation. This new look at alcohol addiction shows up clearly in the answers a nationwide cross section gave to this recent survey question:
