Alcoholism and Recidivism

The parole records of 116 parolees were studied by Guze and Cantwell with respect to the correlation between drinking and criminal recidivism (relapse into further crime). The total number of heavy drinkers (alcoholics plus questionable alcoholics) showed significantly higher rates than the nonalcoholics in the percentage of subsequent arrests, the mean number of such arrests, the percentage of subsequent imprisonments and the mean number of such imprisonments.
