About Alcoholism - Alcoholism Information, Research and Treatment

"We found that the so-called lack of motivation (to seek recovery) on the part of the person with alcohol problems may have in large part been due to a lack of motivation on the part of the physician (to diagnose alcoholism).

"We made a study of the criteria used by physicians to define a patient as 'alcoholic.' We found patients were not being referred to us (at the alcohol clinic) if they had other, physical symptoms, if they had jobs, if they were married, or if their drinking pattern resembled that of the referring physician."
