Dr. Ira H. Cisin of George Washington University told a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science that a recent study shows the proportion of women who drink has been steadily rising. At the same time the proportion of men drinkers in the population has been about constant for 20 years .

Among male drinkers, however, 21 percent are classified as "heavy drinkers," while only 5 percent of women drinkers are in the category. The definition of "heavy drinker": one who drinks three or four times a week, with usually "three or more drinks per sitting," or one who drinks nearly every day with an occasional consumption of five drinks or more.
