"Many of us would not be alive at all if we were not living in a sense in a drug culture," says Dr. Humphrey Osmond, psychiatrist at the New Jersey Neuro-Psychiatric Institute in Princeton, N. J. "We use aspirin for our headaches, penicillin for our infections, and the middle class has always had its psychic drugs--alcohol, cigarettes, coffee. The atmosphere of the present is supercharged with stimulation, and pot is the drug that youth believes fits its present needs."
