Reds Get Tougher as Vodka Flows Faster

The Soviet Union is moving to deal again with one of its recurring problems--too much liquor.

A new law provides a two-year sentence in a special labor camp for alcoholics who "systematically misuse spirits." This variation of a prison is called a "prophylactic labor center for compulsory treatment and reeducation through work."

The law applies only to confirmed alcoholics in the Russian Republic, but the other 14 Soviet republics usually follow suit on important changes in criminal codes.
