Embattled Evanston

EVANSTON, ILL. (CDN)--The great liquor wars of Evanston are fermenting again, and a gray-haired woman with a gentle smile is the dauntless warrior in the front line of defense. She is Mrs. Fred J. Tooze, national president of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, which has its headquarters here.

Over the years, she has successfully waged combat with John Barleycorn many times in Evanston. Now that she has again joined the battle, she is escalating the fight against what she feels is a new threat to the suburb's long-standing prohibition against retail sales of liquor.
